Shrekahnth Shrekahnth's collection, inspired by Filippo Marinetti's interpretation of futurism, was one of the most innovative collections to be presented at DFW. As the soundtrack of Stanley Kubrick's masterpiece, 2001: A Space Odyssey, appropriately set the mood, Shrekahnth presented a cohesive 24-piece callection of mod silhouettes and futuristic cuts, induding jumpsuits with astronomical patterns followed by structured Jong dresses in satin and Habotal (China silk). The show closed with eight designs covered in “movable prints” made possible with a painstaking technique in which the designer manipulated 3D prints anto the two-dimensional canvas of silk. The audience was requested by a robotic male voice to wear their 3D glasses as creations came out with abstract headpieces designed in collaboration with the milliner, Nazgul Nejmi, Shrekahnth's main feat was his ability to make these prints work both with and without the glasses.

DAY 3, SHOW 2 Shrekahnth Having launched his first collection at DFW 2010, Shrekanth returned with his futuristic 3D-themed 2011 Fall/Winter line. Flowing outfits were accompanied by elaborate head-dresses influenced by planetary symbols. With digital prints ranging from the natural to abstract images of space, the outfits utilised muted winter shades with dashes of colourin the form of geometric patterns. Inspired by Filippo Marinetti’s ideas on futurism, the 24-piece collection presented straight silhouettes and futuristic cuts. Known for his signature digital printing and his meticulously researched designs, Shrekahnth's outfits once again used minimal embellishments and allowed the prints to hold on their own. Models sashayed to the soundtrack of Stanley Kubrick's masterpiece, ‘2001: A Space Odyssey; as the Shrekhanth logo glowed in 3-D in the background. The audience was asked to wear supplied 3D glasses,as outfits with fluid patterns created the illusion of movement on stil fabric. Shrekanth announced plans to start an accessories label, ‘Medusa, which will comprise handmade creations from Germany.

On October 24", the Atlantis Hotel and Resort was invaded with red-soled Louboutins and flashes from overzealous paparazzi. The socialites and fashionistas of Dubai had conquered the ornate tent venue that housed this season's Dubai Fashion Week. Under Capital Marketing, the dream of Dubai Fashion Week lives on. This year saw the departure from the previous season's loyal venue, Emirates Towers, with a good reception. A Mercedes-Benz New York Fashion Week ambiance was in the air for the first time with the Lincoln Center-esque tents and the DFW-stamped walkway. But resembling it's international counterparts is one thing, DFW still has quite a way to go in terms of becoming a credible fashion week that is respected by the international fashion scene. A great platform for emerging talent, DFW is lacking only in regional support. The talent is there. The drive is there. What we need is for the regional fashion scene to work together rather than size up each other's stiletto heights. We need front rows filled with Isabella Blows and Sarah Belhasas types, while the Anna Wintours and bloggers boldly tell the stories of our innate talent and unparallel style. Dubai Fashion Week is good initiative, but it could be a great fashion week. That rant aside, here are the Oscars of Dubai Fashion Week: the good, the bad, and yes, even the ugly. Best Concept: Hands down, this award goes to Shrekahnth. By Shrekahnth Probably one of the most well researched designers out there today, Shrekahnth offers intellectual stimulation in an industry that is often blamed for being model-dumb. His Blackberry Kaftan, inspired by a Blackberry motherboard and embellished with an actual bejeweled one was stunning, as well as a strong commentary on where we are in the world today. His collection was inspired by how texture has evolved from Pre-Islamic art (check out his gorgeous stain-glassed one-shoulder piece) to the modern times of BB messenger. His YSL tribute Kaftan, a reinterpretation of the famous 1965 Mondrian dress, was not only clever, but also a must-have in every fashionista’ closet.

The designer chose a dark and dramatic route to underline his apocalyptic vision. Models in untidy loose braids and swathed in Kaftans with glowing volcanic ember nts erupted onto the catwalk, wil robes imprinted with primitive tribal faces showing the evol civilisations were also shown. Digitised DNA patterns that underline the birth of humans were also woven into'is robes. Though Shrekahnth, stocked at S*uce and United Designers, is known for loose flowing Kaftan, short dresses were a part of his shovicase. “I want to enter the European markets. Apart from the Gulf regions, Tam now selling n Russia and Irland. Iwant them to feel as f my clothes are perfect for lounging around in a beach resort,” said Shrekahnth. Though some of the robes looked overloaded with print patterns, the majority of his 30-piece collection was wearable. But the real statement pleces were the towering shoes that perfectly matched the patterns on the robes.
